 My 8-month-old son, Elijah. His hair is kind of spiky in places, and has a cowlick (on the left forehead if it's not evident). I had wanted to submit a shot with backlighting shining through his hair, but the backgrounds on those weren't working. (I didn't leave myself much time to apply expert editing allowed for this challenge.) So I composed this pretty close to what you see to emphasize his hair (without his mouth).
Shot in RAW. In RSE, adjusted exposure compensation, and shadows and highlights.
In Photoshop, cropped a smidge, cloned a little boo-boo on his nose, some blotchiness on his forehead, and a bit of his shirt that showed on the right. Converted to BW with Hue/Saturation layers w/Color blending mode.

Greetings from the Critique Club:

First off, I would like to say that your composition is unusual and interesting. I think a smaller aperture (maybe f/2.8) would have increased the depth-of-field and helped to bring more of his crown into focus. High contrast images usually work better for black and white. That said, try using the channel mixer as opposed to straight de-saturation for more flexibility in conversion.

Very reminiscent of the old "Kilroy was here" character. A little soft on the eyes, but overall very nicely done.

I like the negative space you created and i like how it looks like it goes from sharp to a softer look at the hair. Nice Job...very cute!

wow, there are ton of things working for this image. I love the cropping the look in the eyes the use of dof. I do think the focus is a tad off and the catch lights are a little low. noise is an issue and I think a slight contrast bump would help. your whites are muddy. I like what your doing here though I really think it's a nice image
