This is one of my favorite glass bowls and the subject of many pictures. This was shot with a black background with reflective sides. My light source was a black light and there was a mirror underneath the bowl. I placed neon colored paper tubes around the bowl out of the viewfinder area to add the reflections. Basically, the only post editing thing that I did was spot. Dust can be a real issue with long exposure black light photography.

Beautiful! Black light photography - I've never heard of it, sounds VERY interesting. How did you come up with the idea of putting the bowl on a mirror, adding the tubes for colour, the lighting, all that? I like this picture very much.

from the Critique Club

The strongest point to make here is to echo the comment of timmi below: this is such a small image, in terms of file size: only 34K of the allowed 150K. And I'm sure this has hurt your scoring here - and given that you finished 8th with it ... I can only, of course, suggest spending some time on the computer, because it's a great shame to let down a great image with a poor reproduction of it.

Reducing the image to pure shape and colour is well achieved - the technical side of the actual photography is faultless. I do wonder though if some people found it to be more about colour than about shape. Not sure how one would separate the two in any meaningful way, but I think you may have been here long enough to know that some can be pretty pernickety in their interpretations of challenges.

For mtself (and I should say that I'm not a fan of this 'kind of thing' particularly), I find it too abstract - if you like, it's pure unfamiliarity. If, for instance, it were a recognisable object with that play of light on it, that combination of the familiar and unfamiliar would be the more striking. But that's just an opinion, of course.

Interesting pattern of lights; but kind of busy and hard to pick a focal point.

Fits challenge PERFECTLY since it's the "shape" I'm looking at, and not a glass vase or whatever it is. Great job, title fits the pic great, and very cool to look at. Colors are spectacular against the black. 9.

Beautiful curves and flow. Colours enhance this visual fantasy. Good simple background. It just looks a bit pixelated, which could be easily fixed (maybe higher compression quality of the JPG.)

I really like this. It is very abstract, "curvy" full of color. After the challenge, I would love to know how the lighting was done here.

Stunning color, and interesting concept for shapes. The composition is strong, well balanced and very visually engaging. I admire the imagination it took to come up with this kind of shot. 10

I have no idea how you achieved, hopefully not too much in PS, but I love it. I hope there is an explanation that can be seen later.
