 The difficulties I had with this shot: again, unexperienced at night photog and attemting to shoot through THICK glass therefore unable to use flash

Don't be to hard on yourself. It takes a while to learn the things to do for night shots. I can't do to well at them either. Just through yourself a learning curve and go at it full force.
