Thanks to everyone for their time in helping me out. I took most of the suggestions and did a re-edit which I think looks a lot better.
Thanks again,

I agree that I like the eye contact of this one over the other. Your dof is great here. The deer is clearly draws the eyes but at the same time I get the "camoflauge" feel of a deer in his native environment. |

I like this, I might consider cloning out the branches on the lower right. My eye sort of drifts over to that. |

A nice portrait of a deer.
The overcast sky helps even out the exposure of the entire image...that's nice. But there's lost life-lights in the eyes on days like that. Still, it's a good capture for illustration.
A couple of background things that bother me:
--the orange leaf
--the globular shape between the antlers
--the definition in the background twigs...perhaps a little selective blur to take care of what the lens could not would be in order? |

I like this one better than the "proud profile" because he is engaging the viewer. In the other one, there is a branch in front of the body, which to me, was slightly distracting or out of place. Here the branch on the left is just a natural part of the scenery. The animal is in focus and the background is not, which is great for your subject. I wish I could get close-ups of animals like these. It's gorgeous and I think this is a great picture! |
