Challenge: Cell Phone Mania (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
Location: Lima
Date: Mar 19, 2007
Aperture: f/4.5

Date Uploaded: Mar 20, 2007

This shows the extreme madness of combining two 100% distracting manias: a) Driving while operating the cellphone; b) loging in DPC website to check score, which it's now possible from almost any cellphone. How I found out? you guess :)

This was staged, so truck, road, sign, car, drivers...everything is real.

The hands in the picture belong to 2 different people (my "models")who are reaching the steering wheel and cell phone from the sides, so I could put the tripod and camera on the drivers seat. Light inside the cabin is a flash with a difuser through the sunroof opening. Light outside is a 800w monolight. All wirelessly triggered.

Squared crop was necessary in order to make cellphone screen readable at 640 px but this photo looks a lot better in a horizontal composition.

After Challenge:

As I could have anticipated, two things totally ruined the score of this photo: a) The ugly squared crop, which, unfortunately, was necessary due to the 640 px size limit; b) the votes from people w/o cameras (5.3!!!)who most likely do not understand the complexity of lighting and executing a shot like this.
For those interested, here a couple of pictures of the setup.
...unloading sign from truck.

..lighting setup.

Thanks to commenters who gave this shot an avg of 7.7500. Including the one who called it a snapshot :)

I will keep on trying.

Great photo. Glad you made the top twenty. For some reason I found myself thinking about this photo last night. The preparation that went into it is fascinating (I've now saved this and the two set-up shots to my favorites).

I generally evaluate photos and not the captions, but I wonder if a different caption might have improved your ranking. It's funny in an "insider joke" kind of way, but as a newcomer I found the caption confusing (and still do, in a way). Just my two cents on that. Cheers, and keep up the good work!

Well done, this is a fine example of a story depicted with a single image. As a moving picture cameraman for many years I can really appreciate the work that went into the setup and lighting.

Owen,
Thanks!
As you pointed out in your comment durig voting, DOF was very important, and it was set to depict concentration, and distraction, of the driver in the cellphone's screen, and to guide viewer's eyes accordingly.

Good to see you got a PB for this. The more I look at it the more I think how well executed it is. Congrats.

Very funny. The amount of blur and light on all your background elements is just right.

I was thinking you're a bit nuts grabbing this photo with the truck coming your way, THEN I noticed the WRONG WAY sign!!! Must be youngster behind that steering wheel. :) Good luck in the challenge.

the whole website oont he phone is a bit unorginal. I really like this image, but it would have been plenty strong without the website on it...almost turns me off.

I would be heading the wrong way if I were checking my scores too! Having the signs there adds some excitement to the shot.

10 Baby !

Although not the greatest picture in the world, the idea and execution of the shot makes up for it.

I wonder how you did this.
