From the Critique Club
First of all, a disclaimer. I didn't enter this challenge because I could not get a good shot with the limitations of my camera. That out of the way...
The first thing I noticed about many of the Soft Focus shots were that they were VERY dark and DULL in color. This one is no exception on those details. However, with this shot I personally think that those issues are not as important. This shot comes off good as dark as it is. I WOULD like to see just a TAD BIT of fill light on the left and rear cactus parts. Also, the dullness of the color here is not really a detraction because of the almost monotone color scheme!
I am a little bit amazed that you maintained a sense of pokiness of the cactii thorns here. Even though the focus is soft, the thorns still seem very sharp and something to stay away from!
A very nice image overall and MUCH better than I could have hoped to achieve!

Oooh sort of dreamy. I quite like the softness in this (and I'm NOT a fan of soft focus) - it seems to serve a purpose (other than simply meeting the challenge) which is to contrast with the spikiness of the subject matter. Spiky subject, soft treatment. Finding the image a touch too dark overall. |

The colors and shapes here are intersting, and the soft focus does seem to add to the shot. Nice work. |

I like the angles, but the color bothers me for some reason. I like the shot though. |

I like the incongruity of the subject matter, given the soft focus effect used. The tonal range is excellent, throwing all of the focus on the well exposed spikes. The duotone dark green is effective in furthering this too and the lines and flow is subtle and interesting. I love the soft glow to the spines. |
