It might suck (is that an Icelandic word?) but it still is a pretty decent composition in my eyes. Then again, my taste probably - how do you say it in Icelandic? - sucks as well.

Chess photos are difficult to take effectively so that they grab the attention of non chess players. I think you succeeded very well here. The grain is effective in this situation.

really nice use of lighting, high contrast, shallow DOF and grain. IN addition, the perspective and angle of this shot are right on the money. It all works very well

interesting that I almost can't distinguish the black pieces from the white. also interesting that I can't see who is protecting the queen. It must be another rook. A white rook, as a matter of fact. Interesting... a very clever tribute to the missing whiterook, if it is one. Grain helps the drama of this photo. 7

Good use of the technique - the depth of field and tilt to enhance the composition work well. It suffers, for me, from the usual problem with chess shots, of seeming portentously meaningful, freighted with messages, effortfully significant; whilst it actually lacks humanity, both in subject and in sense, I feel. I suspect it'll score reasonably well.
