I really got a kick out of this picture. Although it's not a technically brilliant as many of the other submissions I've seen on this site, it captured the challenge for me w/o taking the middle of the road. It is one of the first planned, created photos I've done. For the most part in the past, I've taken pictures with ambient lighting and worked with whatever positioning there is. I know some didn't care for the DOF or contrast, and these are things I'm working on. I'm something of a purist in that I don't ever really touch up the photo with the unsharp mask or re-crop. For these challenges I shoot in 640x480 and use the camera to crop. It just feels more 'organic' to me this way. |

I'll bet you had a lot of comments asking where the pencil is. I think this is great....I love the idea. Could use a bit more focus and contrast for me...but I like it... 8 |

nice use of b&w; like that "boston" is inverted, and shavings are partially in shadow; also like use of dof; would like to see sharpener fill less of the frame and a more head-on perspective 5 sjgleah |

Nice idea but it needs more contrast. |

In regards to the title, I'd have to say Yes it is! Almost did this one myself. I would like to see the color version also to compare and find out why you went with b/w. The angle is good and I like the placement in the frame. Lighting is good. The dark spot inside the pencil sharpener is a bit dark for my taste, but that's just an opinion. besides, it looks like it could have been a bit difficult to get light in there anyway. I like how I can see all the way through the pencil sharpener. I wonder how many people are going to knock this down for "not meeting the challenge?" Personally, I say it meets the challenge right on. Great job and good luck in the challenge. |

Excellent stuff - the DOF really helps to focus the eye onto the pencil remains! One of my top pics for the week. |

Takes me back in time. Great close up, nice composition, with some wonderful curves. Keeps my focus right inside the frame. 7, Kavey |

Nicely framed, with good contrast. I might increase the contrast a tad, but over all, very nice! I like the variety of texture in the shavings vs. the smooth metal. |

I'm afraid that this is the "pencil that was" Not really in keeping with the theme |

Nice picture, but I don't really see a pencil. OK, I see the remains of a pencil. |

This is a neat interpretation of the challenge.. ;) I understand your intention completely witht this shot, but i fear that you have left yourself open for a lot of 'does not meet the challenge' comments :( I did the same thing last week with my 'Needful Things' photo. I left the voter an opportunity to see an abstract view of the challenge. I did not do well... :( I like your idea and I understand your meaning here :) good shot... = 8 - jmsetzler |

Great shot....excellent focus and DOF. This is a really nice (and different!) take on the pencil challenge: simple, and (hopefully) just about everyone who was ever in elementrary school will know what it is. Don't you remember the way the pencil sharpener smelled when you took it off to empty it? Love that.... muckpond |

How about...."Wooden pencil goes to pieces after encounter with rotary giant." I think I'm getting punchy from all these pencil photos. I keep seeing headlines in each one I open up. This is a good B&W with good ROT's. =7 syamjonimi ;-D |

Oh man! I thought I was the only one who had one of these "lying" around their house. I walked by it all week and didn't once think to use it! Great shot. I really like the composition. 9 shedonist |

Meets Challenge Theme:Yes Technical :fair...lighting is good, but focus is very shallow. Composition:good Creativity:good idea! Remarks:I think I'd like this more if the whole were in focus but I still like it. Good choice for black and white too. Grayce...aka...Gracious |

i'm not sure i understand what the item is ... the inside of a pencil sharpener maybe? it's pencil shavings inside, i assume). so, while you technically met the challenge, i would've preferred to see a whole pencil - but that's just my opinion. the focus is good on the photo, i like the framing, too, and the b&w works. i'm just overall confused by what i'm looking at, i guess. sorry, probably me being dense. -- gr8photos (3) |

Does physically containing a pencil include the shavings from that pencil? Not sure of your idea here, so it can't rate too highly from me. |
