Challenge: Trees (Minimal Editing I)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Nikon
Location: Concord Ca
Date: Feb 20, 2007
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 30

sharpen. resize. sharpen.
Setup: I used a graduated ND upside down hand held to darken the foreground as there is a road with streetlights, and I set the white balance to tungsten and focused on the moon and left the lens open at 2.8.
I had too many options, I hope this was the best...
Post Challenge: WooHoo!! A ribbon and a PB!!!! I am ecstatic!! Thanks for all the comments, I have some outtakes up on my profile :). The bright "star" by the horizon is actually Venus. I may now return to my normal life as this is my highest finishing week on DPC! :D

As a side note to my two shots this week, one is a self portrait, and this shot is a few minutes from my house. I never would have taken either of these shots if I hadn't participated in the 30 Day Where I Live and Self Portrait challenges. IMO I learned more about my equipment and lighting and PP doing these then I do in challenges and most forum posts. I recommend doing these 30 Days atleast once, you won't regret it.

This photo was selected as the Kodak Picture of the Day for April 13, 2007 :)

Perhaps because of its simplicity, the way it has so beautifully pared the landscape down, this photo is one that has stayed with me in my mind. Occasionally when I am travelling at dusk I find myself looking to see if I can find my own version of it!

Congrats, Joe! My personal best is almost as old as yours was, so I can well appreciate how nice it must be to top it. And a ribbon to boot. :)

I couldn't agree more with you about the Where You Live challenge, too.

Very nice image, I really like the outline of the hill and how you frame the photo with the trees at the right with the background light coming into the image from the right. The little bright spot just above the hill line to the left is a bit distracting but otherwise the photo couldn't be better imo. Congrats on the ribbon!

This is really superb for straight from camera. Sure, it would be nice to fix the blown celestial object on the left, but you are getting a great score from me for the beautiful stars, motion in the curve of the hill, and great composition with the trees. I also like that you took a risk with 4 trees instead of the magical 3 that is supposed to be used for everything, LOL.

Lovely composition - the curve of the silhouetted hill and the not quite even spacing of the four trees and the way they balance with the placement of the moon - all work really well together. Love the colour and detail in the sky too.
