Really strong gritty photo which may have benefited from a little grain. I love the monochrome effect and general feel of the photo which is really added to by the boarded up shop front and the street signs.
It looks like the signs are trying to warn you about this end of town 'Do not Enter ' 'Wrong Way'
Very good picture. |

Hi, Greetings from the Critique Club:
Composition: The composition is great. Whilst the image can almost be broken into a rule of thirds...by being slightly off you have still balanced the image but given it a unique feel, leading into a story of its own.
Technicals: There is a large tonal range in this image and you have handled all those areas well. I am pleased to see no blown out areas. The perspective is correct as is the depth of field. Choosing to use F10 instead of a wider aperture has kept as much detail within your story as you could.
Summary: Overall...I think this image has a lot to offer. The way the Tshirt man is looking at the other man as if he is talking to him but in a split screen is excellent. The signage lends to this same mood. Job well done. I can definitely see why this image scored so well.
P.S. I have to admit that I didn't look at the author until I finished typing this and was very pleased to see who this image belonged to. I have admired your work for some time and hope that my critique is pleasing to you. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. |

You got an 8 from me and I stand by it. One of the much better ones in that challenge. Hard boiled (as in detective novels.) Good work. |

The composition on this one is really nice. Also the difference in the two technologies is great. |

This was one of my favorites, too. I love the juxtaposition of the types of telephones and how the light post separates them. Nice, seedy feel to the area, too. |

I gave this a 7 and never got a chance to come back to it, or I would have bumped it higher. Excellent capture, a real energy between the people and the architecture: the bars, the signs, all give a sense of alienation, while the phones give a sense of connection, but an ironic sense, since they are not talking to each other. |

Very well seen, well composed and the B&W is quite well done. I like how the pose separates the two gentlemen, and I like all the different textures. |

like the irony that you captured. would have been better if the cell-phone user were dressed in a business suit. ultimate irony would have been the pay phone user in a business suit and the cell phone guy in dirty rags. judicious use of dodge/burn here. well done |

i like this shot a lot on my 2nd viewing. there is a clear divide here in the lamp-post and this also is in just the right place being push right of center. The street signs also giveing a Keep out vibe adds to the shot.
Bumping up one point |

like the composition. like the processing. from your title, i gather you had trouble as well moving this from more than just an interesting group of objects to an image with that "aha" factor. still good. |

Very good technicals on this photo. But I don't think it would work as well without the guys. The younger one on a payphone and the older on a cell. You would very much expect the roles to be reversed, typically the younger generation loving cells and the older not really embracing them. This probably sounds really stupid...but something about the 'Do not enter' sign really adds to this. Very nice! |

the street sign almost looks like it is telling the payphone person that using it is the wrong way of making a call now-a-days. I like the fact that it appears to be an older person on the new age phone and a younger person on the older phone. You tones are nice and while you are a bit back from the subjects you still draw the views eyes right into the image and they know what the subject(s) is. good job. |

Interesting detail, well observed. And on top of the interesting locality and people, some really interesting text, textures, shapes here on a visual level too. |
