Good morning from the critique club.

I suspect this one did not quite turn out the way you had imagined it. Candle light photography is not a piece of cake! And dealing with melting subjects is not always very practical.
You final result is pleasantly intriguing and, without the title, some might wonder what they are seeing if they do not see the flames.
To have the flames stand out better, choosing a dark colored candle would probably do the job. It is not obvious to me if you added some other lighting too this scene. If not, some would certainly diminish the contrast factor between the flames and the rest of the composition, allowing you more editing possibilities.
Presentation wide, always go to the largest possible size allowed. Your picture is 460 wide while it could have been 640.

Hope this helps, all the best, JJ

Excellent idea and probably fun to do. It's so hard shooting light and ot getting glares where the flame is, I"m still working on that. The grain detracts from this shot for me, a bit more smooth and a bit more focus, clarity would really make this shot pop. Also if you could somehow have the candle suspended instead of laying down, perhaps have a nail through the middle in the back so it's away from the table, have the wax dripping down instead of pooling. A 5

probably would have been better if you could actually have seen the flame..i.e., from the side.

I like the idea. I think it would have been better if you had used a lower point of view so the wicks and flames were more obvious.

the wick... this is nice- could have more contrast- but extra points for the glowing white candle.

A Grand Idea!
I am not too keen on the execution though. Now, I know if you had tilted it, folks would be complaining, "IT Should be Straight" but, I would have like to have seen this at a more interesting angle. A shot from the side instead of the top would have added more depth to the picture by allowing more contrast between the candle, flame and background thus, enhancing the flame. Good Try.

A side view definitely would have been better. The flames are hidden by the candle.

I really feel that there is a lot that could be improved here. I'm going to try and explain why I don't care for this photo, hopefully you will get something out of it. For one... I don't really see anything interesting here, ok it's a candle that has wax puddles on both sides, but there is no meaning to it besides your title. For me it was hard to see what it was, even after I saw the title. The straight down look to the shot is quite unappealing, while it is a different look then one might expect, I'm just not sure it works. To me this shot could have been made more interesting 1, with it on some kind of a stand looking at it from the side 2, with some sort of a bright colored candle (blue or green etc.) 3, I can't tell if it's burning or not, I think it is but it's hard to see, burning from the side, seeing the flame would be nice 4, a white background so that the wax from the brightly colored candle would show up brilliantly and 5, wait for possibly a drip to shoot the photo. As it is, I'm sorry, but I gave it a 1.

I think I would have tried a different angle. I like the concept and literalism.

I think that if this was taken at a different angle and not from the top, it would have shown up mucj better. As it is, the flames aren't really very clear. Nice idea though

Cool angle. but how would it look from the side? It might be easier to see the flames.

Needs to be an eye level shot.
11/17/2003 08:27:28 AM
i think a more dramatic angle would help this shot.

The concept is good, the link to the title and phrase is good. Unfortunately the quality of the pic is just not really there. I'm guessing you went overhead to get the puddles of wax and to show both ends being burned. Did you try it in other angles first? Being black and white the flames have blended into the color of the candle a lot and dont really stand out as much. I think possibly an angle from the front at the same level of it could have shown the high flames on either end, that way you could have got the feeling of being closer without worrying about your camera melting in the heat.

I really think you should have used color in this shot because its hard to tell whats going on here, the flame blends in too much with the candle.

Nice idea, but the not angle you took it. Did you try a lower angle so you could see the flames better?
