Series of digressions led me to this point. Last night, there were fire trucks in our neighborhood, and I saw the orange glow of light where the fire would be. I was worried for our neighbors and thankfully it turned out to be just a power line had snapped. But I did not find that out till morning and went to bed thinking that there was some poor family without a warm home on this cold night. I started thinking about what else it would be bad to not have and started thinking how God awful it would be if I could not feed my kids. So that became the idea for bad but of course the kids would not cooperate. The picture finally evolved into a woman who is ashamed because she has to beg for food - but does it because she needs to feed her family. The end.

I like this shot! Great use of depth, intimacy, and frame coverage. Very good!

The composition is perfect! A great shot, but becomes even more powerful after reading your description. I agree a 5.8 doesn't do this shot justice. But with the challenge theme in mind, I think Sad comes to mind first.

This has a very powerful and strong message, in this strong black and white image.....

Powerful shot. Good DOF, good lighting.

I wonder whether a chipped or cracked bowl may have helped convey the idea even more ?

The idea you wanted to express is not really reflected, not sure why? The model does not really look like that? Or her expression? Or her hand?

This photo says "I am a good photo" but it doesn't say much else. She doesn't actually seem hungry. And why is she showing us a pristine bowl? She doesn't seem to want us to fill it. She seems only to be displaying it for the photograph. She also is pristine. I get no sense of poverty from her. You seem to be using your (impressive) skills to make an attractive subject, but that is inappropriate for the effect you want. Nice composition, nice use of dof, but also to no effect.

Good strong image, but it just seems like everything is a bit too clean. With some grunge on the model and the bowl, it might make a bit more sense.

I like the idea and the shot, but the hand is too clean and nice and the bowl is as well.

Interesting moody shot. The simple comp works well and conveys good emotion.
