I might eventually show the usual monuments of Washington, DC, but I hope to keep this project quirky. You can see several of them in a collection within my portfolio if you like.

Thanks to this project, I was carrying my camera as I walked from my office to donate platelets today, which took me past the White House (I work 4 blocks from there toward the US Capitol).

The point of the pic is this little-known oddity called the Zero Milestone, which was supposed to be used as the origin point for all distances in the US.

The text says "Point for the Measurement of Distances From Washington on Highways of the United States." Pretty grand idea, but in reality most people don't know what it is, and I don't think it was ever really used.

I should mention before everyone else does that I agree it'd be better if you could read the text. I tried to bring it out in processing but without a whole lot of effort, didn't manage it.

Great image, and I like the stories you tell (in both words and images); I, too, like the centered composition and the lining up of the White House behind the stone.

Cool shot with the White House in the background. Since I don't know too much about American history, I didn't know this existed (the milestone I mean, not the White House!!) so I have learned something new today, cheers!!

I really like how it looks like the White House is hovering on top of the stone. Just an illusion, but it tickled me.

hey Jeff,

I copied your image and brought it into Photoshop.
A healthy dose of sharpen using the unsharp mask added a lot of detail to the letters give it a try and see what you think!

Neat! I can't beleive I didn't see that when I was in Washington in November....I was right there and took photos of the White House! And I am certainly looking forward to your photos of Washington. I was only there for a weekend and didn't get to see much other than the usual tourist places.

I like it! I love quirky little things that most people never see or don't realize exist. I am one of those people that likes to stop at the roadside tourist traps!
I like how you lined it up with the White House in the background. Sky is a little flat and I would try to clone out the (what looks like) yellow police tape on the left.

It's a shame we can't read the text - it would strengthen the photo. Look forward to more quirky bits of your town.
