Challenge: Shallow DOF III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon MF 105mm f/2.5 AIS
Location: Olympic Sculpture Park
Date: Jan 26, 2007
Aperture: 2.5
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/40
Date Uploaded: Jan 27, 2007

This entry is probably pushing the Shallow DOF a bit. Taken at the new Olympic Sculpture Park. This was probably my best photo with some of the secondary subject out of focus. I have other photos from the day I enjoy more, but they don't fit the challenge at all.

Shot at f2.5. Not much post on this one, used my programmed Velvia settings for this. Changed the white balance from shade to daylight, changing sky from purple to blue. Non-Crop. Re-sized and applied slight unsharp mask.

Probably a 5.1 due to subject matter. Funny thing is living in Seattle area all this time, this is my first picture of the Space Needle.

Here is the Original straight from camera, so you can see the crop :)

and here is the Original with the *Shade* white balance that was initially set in camera, maybe I should have left it this way:

Great colors! I wonder how it'd look cropped so that the upper right corner and right edge are all within the right-hand red leg? Maybe put the top just below the lighter-colored crosspiece? That way you'd have solid red framing the Space Needle.

Jason, I really like this shot and I'm surprised it didn't do a little better than it did. I was looking at this for a while trying to figure out what people didn't care for. After-all, the needle is very clear and nicely framed by the sculpture.

I'm just wondering if it's because the out-of-focus part is in the foreground and the in-focus part is in the background instead of the other way around. I think most shallow DOF shots are the opposite of what you have.

I don't know if that was it but it was just a thought.

By the way, I was up in that space needle in 1972 when I was stationed at PSNS for a while and I saw Led Zeppelin at the Seattle Center Coliseium (right near the space needle). At the time, it was called the Seattle Center.

still think your interpretation of low dof is more convincing than the winner's.

Nice framing and contrast. I think the foreground could be a bit more blurred.

Nice photo, but for this challange I gave higher score to photos with both the foreground and the background out of focus.
