-converted from RAW to JPEG
-cropped to get ridd of a light spot on the right
-increased saturation of green (+40%)

I think that, instead of stopping down to get the front apple in focus, I'd suggest dropping it out of the picture. Go for as many contrasts as possible: apple/orange, green/orange, near/far, sharp/blurred, AND one/many. If you decide to retry it, I suggest also moving to a lower angle so the close apple towers over the distant oranges. Also, try spraying some water on the apple (can't tell you why, but it usually adds interest), and make the apple brighter than the oranges.

I Agree with both comments. If both apples were entirely within the DOF, the oranges would still be soft enough and the picture would be much better. Nevertheless I still like the picture for it's bright colours and composition. I might do a remake some day.

Even though the stem of the apple is very sharp, orange, being a stronger colour, draws the eye away. Also, with slightly more DOF would give more definition to the background and more context to the image.
