Some Mallard ducks in a swamp by the space center at Vanier Park, Vancouver. I don't have a decent bird lens, but ducks are super tame and really lazy, so it worked out well.
Not much done to this one: levels, saturation +25, smart sharpen 200% 0.3 radius, resize, sharpen 100%, border, and voila! A DPC entry and a new desktop background!
I have to admit that I'm worried that my DOF isn't shallow enough. Only one duck is in focus though, so I'm sure it will work out just fine. My prediction: 6.3. Bring it.

A full point below predicted...ah well. Challenge aside, I love this shot. The dark around the eyes isnt there at a larger size, and cant really be fixed with shadow/highlight. At least my free study entry is doing well. |

The technicals: I think well done. Focus is sharp on the subject, lighting is active and dynamic. Colors are nice. DOF is probably on the deep end for what we were trying to get here. I do like the "flow" of the ducks up to the corner although the orange leg annoys me a bit. I probably would have desated it a bit.
The feel: Duck shots. What are you going to do? The successful duck shots I've seen have been on the minimalistic line. One problem is that the shot is so familiar. Not that that is always bad, sometimes capturing a daily scene is excellent, but here I'm not sure what is being said or accomplished in the picture. I get no direction or feel to it other than a picture of a duck.
The score: the difference between this being a 5.3 and a 6.3 lies in "wow" and probably in the DOF. I agree, it isn't quite shallow enough. |

I think the amount of DOF in this shot is perfect. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the deep shadow on the face of the duck in focus. Using the highlight/shadow adjustment or levels/curves may help with bring out more detail in that area. |
