Challenge: Best of 2006 (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS
Location: National Zoo
Date: Aug 14, 2006
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/200
Galleries: Candid, Animals
Date Uploaded: Jan 11, 2007

Not the best of 2006 but to be honest, I didn't have the time to look. This was convenient. I know it won't go anywhere with all the landscapes that are so popular with voters but I felt I should enter something. Date is approximate. My computer is acting up but I found it in my august zoo folder. :) I like the shapes, the shadows, and the light... Settings are inaccurate as my computer is having a fit right now and opening up CS would kill it.

For those who asked, the background was pretty dark as it was in shadow. I underexposed the image when shooting and then adjusted the curves in post processing. If you take the image into an editor and bump the levels way up, you will see most of the background.

I wouldn't have known this was yours...:)
I must say it stopped me though...a shot just of an animal means nothing to me...but you don't do that, you always seem to spot some sort of design, or find a unique compostion that draws me in..so in hindsight I should have figured it out...you know I have never really shot animals at a zoo, and I figure if I ever need to see them, then I can always zip over to your portfolio...

I gave this an 8. Nice study in the shapes of flamingo(e)s. Was fairly minor, but the 'something' at the top in the dark area, held it back for me mostly.

Oh, man, what great colors!

I can't help but wonder how you got the black background with the bright and definitive color? Did you rent the birds and put them in a studio?!!

Oh, ye olde flamingo necks! They are such incredible birds. Nice composition. The dark background works very convincingly.

Nice flamingo shot. While the frame is full and "busy" the subject is still distinct and defined.

Strong colour - the benefits of underexposure, as so many don't understand. I find the composition a little awkward - those curves just aren't similar enough, perhaps, for a really easy-on-the-eye balance. Great stuff, though.

These guys are great to shoot, aren't they? Lovely texture in the feathers; I like the soft light.

Wow, flamino abstraction - great title. You've got all the detail that says "flamingo" and all the color and curl that says pink and curves that could simply be a compelling abstract painting.

Gorgeous tones and wonderful repeated curves and loops. The PP of the background is feeling artificial. Still, a wonderful shot.
