Location: New York City - Central Park

This was taken on my trip to New York City. Beautifull city and a lot to see. I like this picture, it was taken from central park. Everything was so quiet in central park, but so loud and stressfull. It was like you drove outside New York... but not!

Composition: This is okay but it could be stronger. You could either focus on one building or back up and get more skyline. Because there's only a few buildings they all seem to be fighting for prominence in the shot.

B&W conversion. There are a few techniques on effective conversion. One of the simplest is desaturating the image. It is also the dullest. I would recommend googling on how to do this. With a better conversion you would get more striking tones in the picture.

The sky: The sky is somewhat overcast but I can see that there is some details in the clouds. A flat sky looks dull. A sky with lots of details in the clouds looks great. Increasing saturation before the B&W conversion would also help. Unfortunately having the sun in the middle of the shot removes a lot of the detail in the clouds as well. Recomposing and putting the sun off to the side would help compositionally and also with the lighting.

Hopefully you find my comments helpful :)

It's a portrait of a city, which I think is perfectly acceptable given that "N/A" was all that was given for the challenge description. And it's a black and white picture.

It's the first time I've looked at this picture, and I've learnt something new - big buildings in New York are much narrower in depth than I imagined them to be. (And is that The Dakota in lower right?)

Hey, don't worry about it. It's a nice shot. Try to just learn from what happened and keep entering.

Sorry that I offended the masters here, I won't bother taking your time again :)

okay meanies, listen up. some people on this site are:

1. new photographers who may not know even the simple lingo like the definition of 'portrait'
2. people who speak English as a second or even third language.
3. young and innocent
4. so excited about entering a picture they don't realize the exact requirements
5. worthy of gentler comments.

Please remember that you might hurt someone's feelings, causing them to put their camera down and be afraid to pick it up again.

Please, don't just harshly criticize or call someone a 'timewaster'. There's no cause for that. People are trying to learn here...

Both 'Portrait' and 'Landscape' can be so loosely defined that their boundary lines are indeed blurred - I'm guilty of this as well. It helps to title it such I think, like: "Portrait of a quiet spot in a loud place." Maybe...

Anyway, it's a bit soft, but I'll chalk that up to jpeg compression. Unfortunately, the focus itself seems to be the buildings so your title seems to betray an ignorance to the challenge. If this truly is a portrait of the quiet spot, you've done an injustice to it by virtually leaving it mostly out... Perhaps I'd have been convinced if the image was mostly trees, or park bench, or sidewalk with a hint of buildings in the background.

Sorry to sound so rough! The image has its merit, just not for me in this challenge... << 4 >>

Portrait?
01/10/2007 01:32:13 PM
Not a portrait...
01/10/2007 12:15:31 PM
DNMC for me...a portrait? a pictorial representation of a person usually showing the face
01/10/2007 09:08:58 AM
Not really getting "portrait" out of this shot.
01/10/2007 07:46:04 AM
portrait

noun
1. a painting of a person's face
2. a word picture of a person's appearance and character [syn: portrayal]
3. any likeness of a person; "the photographer made excellent portraits"
01/10/2007 07:33:48 AM
Tell me - where is the portrait?
01/09/2007 11:53:39 PM
Subject is not on topic.
01/09/2007 07:55:37 PM
I think this would be classified as a landscape, not a portrait...
