Challenge: Black and White Portrait II (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Nikon D70s
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ED
Location: Paternoster in South Africa
Date: Jan 6, 2007
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/500
Galleries: Portraiture, Children
Date Uploaded: Jan 8, 2007

This was taken on a beach in Paternoster in Western Cape region of South Africa. There was a menacing barbed wire fence just behind where the children were playing. It made an interesting contrast to the children's innocence and the beauty of the area.

Excellent b & w tones, but just too much going on for a portrait, too bad neither of the cute models is gazing longing toward the ocean (or into the camera). Curious how the lighting is so bright on left side but all the other tones are naturally fantastic, especially on the classic "kid-belly".

I guess you're getting low scores for this. It's snapshottish (which is not to say it's a snapshot), but to me it evokes the portfolio of a well-known photographer who took famous shots at beaches.

how interesting and different ... and it improves with time ... at first i thought the eye's cast down detracted from the photograph ... i changed my mind the longer i looked ..
its an excellent photograph and i love the composition and sharpness ... love the way the children are highlighted and the background is a lot darker .. =8

This would have been better, IMHO, with a higher shot, looking down, without all the clutter in the background. Really nice range of emotions.

I love the pose of the child on the right. I love the pose of the child in the middle. The one on the right ruins it for me. I realize that the candid was the intent? Still the tone and lighting are nice. Above average rating.

It's like they are in 3 different places. Fun to watch.

Bizarre. Surreal. That is from a single image? Somehow disturbing. For some reason, I want it to go away. 4 Sorry.

Interesting illumination - but they all appear to have their eyes shut, some open eyes and catchlights would transform this picture. Cute kids.

I like this photo because it's spontaneous with a great composition. It speaks with the it's mood, poses and the setting.
Well done!

I like the lighting. I am sure some people will say that it is harsh but to me, it is nice. Did you have flashes on the beach? Too bad none of the girls are looking at the camera though...

Not a portrait. Background looks surreal even in B+W.

Love the spontaneous action and little people busy-ness. Natural and real. Great clarity and contrasts. :-) Good luck with this entry.

No ones eyes are on the camera, even close to looking at each other or what's going on around them.

Work on the lighting some more. Mid-day sun and flash, on-camera, maybe? The closed eyes ruins it though.

Wow... the lighting on this makes the two kinds in front almost look pasted in ... as if the girl and beach in the background were merely a large photo background. Makes for a very interesting / fun to look at image.
