 My dad. Like his father before him, and his grandfather before that, he has worked for many years in the gold mines of the Witwatersrand. I've broken the legacy, but I'll always know that my family and the miners like them helped build the flourishing city I live in today.

(I got the idea from the top 50 list of songs, but after post-processing, I realised that by leaving off the golden hue, I could just as easily have entered it in the B&W portraits challenge. Ah well, I like this title better, and there probably be less portraits to compete with here ;-) )

After voting:
I'm really happy to make it into the top 10, and to improve upon my best score. But most of all, I'm really proud of getting such a great shot of my dad. He was such a good sport about posing; was very patient with all my demands (dressing up, dirtying face, "No, lower the pick angle a little... no, now up...")

While this would have been gorgeous in B&W as well, I think the gold treatment is perfect - very appropriate given your comments and the subject. And I'm really glad you got such a great shot of your dad, too. It's an invaluable gift you'll always cherish, I'm quite sure. Of lesser importance, congrats on your new personal best, a top ten, and a great score.

Yeah, I wondered about that when I entered it... I just did a quick check: if I'd gotten exactly the same score in the B&W challenge I would have ended in exactly the same position: 9th. So at least I can be content about that :-)

Nicely genuine photo composition. Witwatersrand mines are famous, I know, and some of them hell holes too. I studied and worked in mines in the distant past and many of my colleagues came from the region.

god this guy is manly. when i looke at this i just feel like this guy is so much more hardcore than you can imagine. Great vinetting, it really pulls this photo together.

Super-great! You get a good score because I was led to use the word super. The only thing that gets me is that it looks like it's supposed to be a duotone... but it doesn't look like a successful duotone to me....

Nice portrait. I hate vignetting, but it's kind of appropriate here. It helps hide the fact that you didn't get a good background for this shot, which would have made this a contender. Still, what a great face and pose. 7
