Photo Based upon the song Buttons by the Pussycat Dolls (f/Snoop)

I was trying to capture an interesting still life using the song "Buttons". I shot the photo with a spot light coming from the upper right. I used a small aperture to improve the DOF, and used a 1600 ISO, to give it an "old time or antique feel to the Still Life. I shot it in RAW and played with the color saturation, brightness, shadows, and exposure. I used the lighting effects filter to focus the light and increase the shadows, lens flare on the needle, and finally some dodging in the lower right so the photo would blend into the frame.

Very nice job with the buttons. the printing on the thread label I found a little distracting as it took away from the "old" feel you achieved with the lighting. The glass bowl was a major compositional element, dividing the picture in thirds. 1/3 in the bowl, 1/3 triangle shape of buttons at the base, and 1/3 upper left with the reel of thread. I liked your framing too. I would take the buttons and play some more with them and differennt lighting and maybe some other props, (cloth swaths, thread, wool, fur, plastic etc) I love the details in your buttons and the contrast in the silver colored vs gold vs brass buttons, the dull ones vs the shiny ones etc. Have fun and welcome to DPC.
I'm glad you like the photo of my daughter!

I appreciate all of the suggustions to improve the photo, and especially highlighting the need to improve the focus and sharpen the photo.

Interesting subdued lighting, but overall not sharp enough, and doesn't really 'pop'

Lots of button pictures in this challenge and this one's the best IMO! Nice job.

This is a wonderful idea for a still life photo. Natural lighting is nice and the composition overall is fine. Biggest factor in scoring impact is that the image isn't that well focused. Seems a little blurry. One other thing is some fill light (bounced light from a white poster board would work great with that natural light) would help in the lower left of this image.

All JMO of course. :D Good luck in the challenge.

I like the idea. The angled light picks out the textures nicely. I might have tried a secondary light source from the lower left to keep that corner from dropping so far in value.
