Awwwww, so close to top 20...but oh well, I really can't complain. I thought this would get a 5.9 at the highest. The shell is OOF you fools! However people really liked the texture of the sand, so I guess that's a good thing. The one thing that worried me was the more and more I looked at it, the more it looked like this had been done with a flash (because of the darker background).
For those of you who thought this was on the beach...ha, I fooled you. This was actually taken in my kitchen sink. I got the shell from my mom's crazy shell collection, the sand is actually from bermuda that I brought back with me, and the backround is actually soap bubbles. The lighting came from a window, which is why I was suprised the lighting in the sink wasn't better. I wasn't trying to be meaninful with the shell or anything, I was just trying different things. Firs I tried a seahorse (which I really preferred, it just din't want to get in focus), a real crab shell, and a marbel. I chose this shot becauser the subject is round, which givs it a more centered look and my hand looks very naturally relaxed. I also enjoy the overall feeling that comes from this, and I'm glad others did too. So thanx! |

Wonderful composition. The simplicity here- not overdone as the fingers are relaxed and natural, along with the grain felt by the sand rather than post processing makes this exceptional. Good tone and lighting also.
To pick a little just so you know I'm looking, I think the lighting on the outer edge of the thumb could be softened a bit. But I had to look for it... |
