This is a shot that i took on my way home from church one sunday morning during the month. I was originally going for something in the sky challenge, but dropped it, but loved the image so i stuck with it.

Processing:
convert from a VERY dark raw file. exposed for the sky, since it was so over-poweringly bright.
levels, curves adjustments
run through imagenomic noiseware twice
dodge/burning
resize
save for web.

POST CHALLENGE: I'm really glad everyone pointed out my over-use of noiseninja...as my 2007 goals say, i am trying out new things, and worried more about expanding as a photographer than scoring as an extent. i'm doing this before the WPL4 starts up, because when that occurs, it's on :D but i took this free study to see how much i could do with a really fUgly picture, and i think i did decent with it. it was a 5+, which is MUCH more than i expected, so yay :) here's the unaltered original, only after a raw conversion.

cheers.

(team Dnderexposed, PLEASE don't expect this type of quality out of me in competition. i have a few tricks up my sleeve that don't require this amount of risk for points ;) )

Greetings from the Critique Club.

Hi Jon,

I can easily see why you liked this shot. The scene is very appealing and the colours are lovely and soft - a lovely bucolic scene. The main points I want to cover have already been mentioned in your other comments; namely the noise reduction and the halos. I happen to think the softened effect works very well on the scene, just that you have overdone it, and lost too much detail in the process. The halos above some of the cows are just plain unnecessary, and to me a clear indication that some of the post-processign has been taken too far. There is a really good video tutorial here that covers managing halos when sharpening. Hope this helps.

The main area I would have like to see more detail in on the black cow looking directly at the viewer. This to me is where everything in the image leads my eye, but when I get there it is just a large black patch with no detail. Given this was an advanced challenge I think this cow should have been edited seperately.

It is my hope that these insights are helpful and constructive. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding this critique. And please remember to mark it "Helpful" if you found it so. Good luck with future challenges.

Cheers
Paul

Too much neat image or something.

A well composed shot of a good scene. However, you seem to have completely removed all the detail using neatimage or a similar technique. The result is otherworldly, but, unfortunately, not in a particularly good way. It has resulted in blotchy grass, and plasticky animals. A 4 from me.

as i'm sure you've heard a few times already...a little heavy on the noise reduction and sharpening. the effect is actually kinda cool, but doesn't go over too well in challenges. If it was intentional - good on ya for sticking with what you like. if it wasn't intentional...next time try doing the noise reduction on a duplicate layer and then dropping the opacity to retain the original integrity of the image.

other than that, I like the muted colours and the composition. the black one looking me in the face is the anchor of the image and adds a ton of character to it.

looks like this was run through neat image ... detail is lost in the grass and on the cattle ...

I'm not sure that I like the post-processing, it looks like a Noise Removal Software was overused.

A touch too much neat image/noise ninja for my liking. I wish I could see the grass texture and the fur texture on the weird cow things. Great composition.

Strange artefacts, either from smoothing or processing generally - make the image seem odd to my eye. Not the happiest composition - too many bits of other animals emerging from behind the ones we can see.

wow ...
great composition ... and the softness on the lighter animals (i'm saying animals coz i'm not exactly sure wot they are!) is lovely and delicate ... its a shame that the animal of the bovine variety, who is predominately black, lost his/her detail ... =8

There is something unnaturally smooth about this - all detail of texture has been stripped.

Nice colors and subject matter, but it looks like you've gone way too far with the noise reduction.

Wow, this could be the poster picture for what not to do with neatimage. Yikes, waaaay too overboard on the noise reduction.

I like the processing, but the outline around the critters is very distracting. I'm struggling with this too.

It's a great photo but it looks way over sharpened! Good luck!

Sorry but it appears to be too much sharpening. The halos seem to give it away
