Challenge: Harsh Environments (Expert Editing)
Collection: Challenge Entries (most)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S2 IS
Location: Fireplace
Date: Dec 28, 2006
Aperture: 3.5
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/8s
Galleries: Abstract, Traditional Art
Date Uploaded: Dec 28, 2006

Took a few shots of our fire and then edited the living daylights out of it. Used polar coordinates, smudge to blur the hard vertical line in the middle, then darkened bits. I also cloned in some stuff in the upper right corner.

Post-challenge: many thanks to everyone who voted and commented. The new expert rules are creating interesting discussions of what is "photographic in nature," and I'm still trying to decide myself. This entry is definitely more "art" than my Sky entry, and I'm not sure I like it as a photo any more than the people who voted it low. But it was fun to create, and I like the final look overall, so I'll just keep plowing ahead trying to find the right balance.

I agree with SkyNavada about smoothing the two sharp lines in the center. I find them distracting. Unlike many of the other voters, I think abstract art is a valid form of photography. And I find this image exciting and pleasing. I would prefer it without the stuff in the upper right corner.

Hi, I wish I would have commented during the voting, but I was too lazy. However, I just wanted to let you know that you got one of my two highest marks. I appreciate your photo and still think it was one of the best submitted. Congrats on a good job with the photo and the post processing. Post processing is what I need the most work on!

Sorry but I am not a fan of abstract work and this to me personally is just a big blurry mess and I voted it a 3.

i like the effect here a lot, but i'm not sure it looks as "harsh" as hell's entrance...although i have no first-hand experience to say otherwise....

I have never truly appreciated the abstract form of photography even as I understand it's appeal...

Nice conceptual photo for a not so nice place - it's definitely the harshest environment I can think of.

I have no idea what that is.

Hmmm...? I'll have to print this out so I know what to look for when the time comes. For the photo...I think I would have smoothed out the two lines near the center. Great use with the expert rules...they were fun!
