 I went fishing in the mountains in a remote spot north of Cape Town where the road peters out as the mountains become impenetrable. Here was a fruit farm, which is marginal even in a good year, and miles from any town. I was up early one morning to witness dawn rise and on the way back spotted this little girl watching nervously from her window. Eventually I coaxed her and some of her friends to come closer and of course they were fascinated by the instant pictures of themselves. That evening I walked past the village again, and with all the children's shyness gone now, became their Pied Piper as a little trail of kids followed to watch me fish. The river is tiny here at its source, full of difficult-to-catch brown trout and hazardous to traverse. Soon my only companion was a sweet, smiling six year-old boy, as nimble as a nymph hopping barefoot from rock to rock. He followed me all the way and eventually back home, waved good night and scampered back to his shack.

He was back next morning, asking for "the fisherman" and I had to trade chocolate for his disappointment when I explained that I could not go.

What a delightful memory this picture will always bring me!

Hm, nothing to do with dirt... except the dirt all over the window. I guess there wasn't enough "earth soil mud" in the shot.

A smile despite poverty?
A fine picture but a TERRIBLE TITLE and it really has NOTHING to do with dirt

Colorful, but the green/teal looks pixelated from the saturation. I wish you could have cropped it so there was a row of brick at the top and the whole window was in the frame. 6

I like the color contrast (even though a bit oversaturated). In saw a similar photo in a photography class before. Very nice.
