A newborn English Setter puppy at just a few weeks old, held carefully in the palm of my wife's hand. It is awful frightning to learn later, just how big and powerful these little guys can become in their first year of life. But, they always seem to remain as loving and as cute as the day life began in the eyes of a grateful owner.

Nikon D1x, with Nikkor AFS Zoom 28-70mm D f2.8 zoomed to 70 mm. Exposure as indicated.

This really is an amazing photograph. Sad to see it come in so low.

Very cute. The soft focus works well, it adds warmth. You should frame this one.

great depth of field on this. i really like this soft focus effect you've got going. my only nitpick would be the existance of the thumb in the photo, but i know it's probably pretty hard to hold a puppy any other way. great colors here, too. good work. one of my top 4.

Precious. I think the soft focus really makes this photo special. 10 (shortredneck)

Cute subject. The photo looks fuzzy which in my eyes is good in this case, because it fits to the subject.
However creativity is not so good and the photo is not really one where I say "Yikes! That's amazing" (and I'm not much better in this ;-))

Very cute, tiny puppy. I think it's cropped almost too close. And focus needs to be better, too much of the picture is blurry.

Nice shot and good title.

So adorable! The hand puts the puppy in scale and sets up an emotional relationship with it for the viewer. Much better than just photographing the puppy on its own. Lovely depth of field to throw the focus on the eyes, and great colours. I'm giving this 10. Maybe you'll win :) - lisae

DOF is all that creates fault with this image. I think this picture would have won the challenge with ease had the focus been on the puppy's face. It is a really great shot, but the focus is so important with portraits like thisâ€Â¦ Sorry to be so negative on such a heart tugging imageâ€Â¦

I wish the focus had been on the puppy as opposed to the thumb.

This is so cute! Another nice puppy photo this week. The focus and aperture are great, placing the sharpest focus right at its eyes. The lighting is nice too and helps set the peaceful, "sleepy" tone. Very nice.

Something new.
Composition - pretty good
Technical Aspects - pretty good. I think a little less DOF and a little more light would have really helped this. Still, quite good.
Meets Challenge - yes
Visual Impact / Originality – pretty good

This is one of the most well executed pet photos I have seen yet on this site. I *love* the soft focus on this shot. it adds a nice sense of serenity to the image. Excellent shot :) = 9 - jmsetzler

Probably for the 37th time..."Awwwwwwww, how cute." Too bad the focus on this is iffy. I wish you had gotten better Depth of Field on this image.

This is so sweet! Great composition and color combos...they set eachother off nicely. I wish the nose were a little more in focus (not perfect though). 9 Lisa

You might get some more of you object sharp if you close the aperature completely. You'll want to use a tripod for the extra slow shutterspeed.
