 Taken at Folly Beach, SC. In 1880, the Morris Island lighthouse was 2,700 feet from the shoreline. Today, the lighthouse stands more than 1,600 feet offshore.

This was a candid image shot as soon as I came over the dunes. The little girl's mother was taking pictures out of frame to the left, and the girl just happened to be sitting directly under the lighthouse from my perspective. I intentionally set the DOF to keep her just out of focus, and tilted the camera to try for a more dramatic angle. I think it worked better than the other straight shots I tried, and just happened to fit into the diagonals challenge. :)

Converted from RAW with saturation and shadows adjustments, resized and USM.

Well heck, the lighthouse and the girl would not have both fit in the photo if you didn't tilt the camera! :)

Simply tilting the camera isn't the best way to incorporate a strong diagonal element.

Nice photo, but for me it's a golden rule not to have water horison on a angle.

A tilted horizon is not wrong per se, but I believe it should be used carefully and for a specific purpose, for example to increase drama, to compliment an unusual perpsective, or to compliment at theme such as abstract shapes. In this case, to me, it brings nothing and indeed detracts from the viewing experience.
If it wasn't possible to use a very narrow aperture, I would have been tempted to leave the girl in the foreground out.

Not sure this meets the "Spirit" of the challenge. IMHO - tilting the camera doesn't make for a great composition.

I'm very curious to see what straight version of this photo would look like. the tilt seems a little contrived as it is.

Minus: foreground too out of focus? would have almost liked it the other way around, her in focus. some of the details a little bland
