The camera was tilted on the diagonal (see the trees in the upper right). This created the illusion of motion and foam beneath the wheel. Actually it's light reflecting on rippling water, but the diagonal makes it look like the water is being swept up behind the wheel.
The original shot was color, but my husband didn't like the pink and aqua wheel, so I tried black & white in post processing.
After slight cropping and levels adjustment, I desaturated the image completely and used a gradient adjustment layer to flip the light and dark tones, creating a negative, or what appears to be a night scene from one that was actually taken in broad daylight. Resized and saved for web.
I don't know how this will be received, but I like it and had a lot of fun working on it. Even though I just used a few simple adjustment layers, the shot is radically different than the original.

It's interesting to learn how one shot looks different on different monitors. I used a dark green gradient adjustment after this was changed to b/w. On my monitor it made the b/w a little less stark, but not really green. It seems that on other monitors, the green is more obvious. I'm thinking that, in the future, I will go to the library and use the public computers to check out my entries before I submit them.

Julianne,
I think you have very interesting perspective in this photo. On my monitor the blacks look a bit green, which may just be my monitor. I would like to see a bit more of the detail in the wheel, but it looks like it was a pretty difficult subject to light! Nice job. |

I think this fits the diagonal challenge well, I also like the green color, I wounder if it were bw or had a blue tent would it have more of a steel look? Or Red for a rust look? (Pink & Aqua so FL. I loved that about FL) |
