A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

~Don McLean

I tried to shoot the photo on the cover of this album. It didn't turn out like I wanted it to but I just don't have a good enough grasp on lighting and I couldn't put my husband through any more boredom by sitting there with his thumb in the air. :-) The focus could be better (should have used my tripod) and the DOF is too shallow. More time and advanced edit would've helped a little.

-Auto levels, contrast & color
-Selective color layer adjustment
-curves adjustment
-dust & scratches filter
-brightness/contrast adjustment
-USM
-neatimaged
-cropped, resized, another round of USM

Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone!! Though I was just a baby during this year, this is one of those songs that'll be around forever and was a staple in my childhood. :-) I tend to lean towards music as inspriration and while googling I came across this album and was pretty stoked that the timing was good. I just had to try it. Wish I could've done a little better job, but I still like it. I'm glad so many people "got it". :)

This is one of the coolest pictures I've seen! And you are so right, that song was huge -- and totally representative of the time :) Fantastic job!

"And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died."

It's certainly a message to be not forgotton... Awesome song.

I saw the photo before the title, and KNEW it just had to be!! Good job. Skin tone on hand looks a bit green on my monitor, but hey!!!

imo a cropping a tad off the right would give a somewhat more powerful image. Cool idea - nicely photoed.

very nice dof work here. a little warmth on the fingers (less bright) would have helped the shot a lot though.

Nice, wish the lighting on the hand was similar to the face in the backround, a bit dark and mysterious that is and not this bright, I like the tones in the face in the backround better. Also might want to put a little makeup on the model next time, you get some glare on the forehead there that is attracting maybe to much attention but other than these issues this is a good shot, 7 from me.

the hand has lost its natural color, because of too strong light. Nice composition and perspective

Interesting image; kind of expected something depicting music or silenced-music for this subject but I guess you stuck your thumb in the American pie? Hand is a little bright on my monitor and background is noisy.

one of the best albums ever. Hand is a little soft and overlit.

This might be my fav of the challenge. I can sing every word of that song forwards and backwards. Maybe a smidge bright on the lighting of the hand. Thanks for a bit of nostalgia. (damn you're young!)
