I was trying to capture the essence of Butte without showing the cliche Berkley Pit, which I believe is the largest open pit mine in the US, and maybe even the world.
I drove around uptown Butte looking for old mines and came across this one, the "Bell Diamond Mine." I was kind of going for the "old vs. new" shot, and that's why I included the city lights. I think some people might ding me for it, but I think it's important to show the city lights, because it shows that the mining is part of the town. Many of the gallow frames are actually in the city, and this one is just on the edge of town. The town is RICH in history, and has the second largest national historic district next to New Orleans.
I shot in RAW. I cropped, levels, dodged, sharpened and cloned out a HUGE amount of censor dust. I think my lens is dirty too. Then I added the text and saved for web. |

Lisa, truly interesting piece. What makes it especially unusual to me is the smooth reflective surface at the base of the image. Water? A car? Whatever, that acts as a foil (and a nice reflector) for the rest of the rough 'n tumble image. Good score, too. Congratulations on a nice image. |

How nice to see a picture of Butte! I was born and raised there. My Mom lives there, she belongs to DPC but I know this picture couldn't be her's as she is away for Thanksgiving.
This is very well done and shows the essence of Butte. I like it a lot. |

Love the old fashioned hand written style of writing - perhaps you should have sepia-toned the photo to match? 8. |

This is one of the best views of Butt - I mean Butte - I've ever seen! Just kidding on the Butt part (I'm from Missoula originally). Not kidding on the lovely photo part. Beautiful lighting and great reflection. 9. |

Interesting shot and well captured...however I think the reflection of your vehicle takes away from it. |
