take one pretty girl, throw her off a ladder, press shutter.

just kidding. this is anu, a friend of mine, who asked me to take some portraits of her. i made her jump, and neglected to rotate the image properly.

shot in our photography studio, lit with a strobe light. one of my first times using the strobe and taking studio shots. just watched a ricahrd avedon documentary a week before.

editting involved channel mixing (god damn that red dress was hard to make work) and a lot of burning to bring the details out.

thanks, everyone.

Very cool. I never would have guessed that she just jumped and you rotated (or failed to rotate!) the photo.

HI from the Critique Club...

Hope this critique can give you a couple of things to think about. If you have any questions just pm me.

My first impression is WOW! This is a striking photo. It is a little disconcerting with the CW rotation but it makes for an interesting portrait in a sea of more standard ones.

Its very free form and fun, so in that spirit, the arm accross half of her face really doesn't bother me. I do wish there were a little more darkness on the upper half of the pic to balance out the lower half.

When i twist my head around to view the 'right' way, it still presents itself a strong portrait and one that communicates a lot of joy. IN short, its technically strong, it's fun, and it meets the challenge. It may not be the strongest BW subject as its impact is more muted but a wonderful image and one you and she should be proud of.

Good luck in future challenges.

This is nice. I like the slowish shutter that shows motion, and the orientation of it does make you think she's falling.

Great idea and well done motion. I just wish we could see more of her face.
