This is one of several photos I took last Friday morning while on a road trip to my hometown of Calumet, MI (in the Upper Peninsula). I originally went out to hopefully catch some beautiful sunrise shots with mist rising on a 30 degree morning. This area of the lake (Portage Lake) is very interesting with its various abandoned structures which date back 50 or 60 years. But in this particular location there is also an old dredge which is a floating barge used to dig out areas of a river or portage in order to increase the water depth & therefore passagability by large ore ships. It has been there as far back as I can remember & we used climb around inside it - an interesting adventure in itself considering everything inside is tilted almost 45 degrees.

With this shot I was trying to capture the essence of the location & all the elements I was seeing at the time - the still water, the horizon, the mist and the dredge itself. I actually came away with several photos that I like & this is just one of them. Post processing included severe dust removal & color shifting overall as well as masking & gamma adjustment on the dredge structure walls.

The atmosphere you've captured here is so interesting... quiet, still, and very imposing with that boat hulking into the scene. Awesome work!

Very cool. I love the atmospheric quality of this. Very light and airy on the one side, then so dark and foreboding on the other.
