 It's one of those wire brush dealybob drill bits. To get the glow I put it in the drill and taped the trigger so that the drill was spinning the bit. I had a six second exposure using ambient light, to get the brush parts to stand out I used a rear-curtained handheld sb-600. Crop, done.

I don't know too much about tools, so I'm none the wiser about what it is. But that doesn't really matter, as long as the image is interesting - and this one certainly is.
