I used to be a ballerina.
I don't dance anymore. but sometimes I feel I *have to* take some old poses to be in peace with myself. a kind of a yoga ballet for reaching tranquility...
:)

a note after voting and disqualification:
I haven't removed anything. I haven't cloned anything. I only selected the bodu, inverted selection and painted the whole background black. I am not that good yet and I didn't have any black background so I had to paint it.
I haven't done anything to the main subject except curves and contrast.
I just don't understand my disqualification and I don't agree with it. |

It's a nice image. Don't worry too much about the DQ - just learn from it. No one reading what happened will think anything other than "oops - no cheating, just a misunderstanding." There have been other DQs for the same problem, so you're not alone.
At issue is that using your technique, the background in the shot becomes irrelevant. There's nothing different between what you produced and cutting the main subject out of any background, no matter how distracting. That makes composing this more about Photoshop skills and less about using the camera to capture what you want.
Remember that DPC is explicitly about learning how to shoot well, not just Photoshop well. Granted, some of the winning images are pretty changed from the original, but again, that's the idea.
None of which affects the beauty of this image, as an image in your portfolio outside of a challenge.
I don't have a black background, either. Try shooting in a dark room with lights aimed only at your subject. I use a few $5 clamp lamps with compact fluorescents rated at the same light output as 150W bulbs.
Stay away from the walls, and you'll end up with a bright subject and very dark background. Increasing the contrast, increasing the black levels (check out layers->adjustment layer->selective color), reducing the brightness, etc. will then drop the almost black to all black.
The exact line of what's okay to drop out and what's not is tricky. I just had an entry where I was worried about it, so I just sent it to the Site Council in advance for an opinion. The easiest way is to upload both the original and the edit to your workshop, then click help->contact us->DPChallenge - General Inquiry and send them the URLs for both. They try to get back quickly (I heard back within 8 hours), but remember they're volunteers. |

Very interesting image. However, there is a bit of a disconnect with the viewer. The way you presented this is very bold (i.e. bright lighting, strong contrast, etc), which doesn't seem to go well with "tranquility" as a theme. The background that you removed could have possibly helped this shot greatly like how it does with many of your other self portrait shots. I agree with taterbug in that the lighting should be more subdued, soft and delicate. Those things would have helped put the viewer in the frame of mind to see tranquility and the essense of this shot.
Let me add, I think your work in general is fantastic. You really have a great eye for shapes and form and you seem to know exactly what to include and what not to include. |

You did not remove minor distracting elements, you removed the complete background! It can probably be seen as cutting out a major element and placing it in a new black image. So both ways it is a no no. Sorry! Nice image though but maybe you need to get a black backdrop. |

Nice form study and good lighting. There are some "jaggies "around the outline of the butt and arm... |

Interesting. I think moving the angle to being straight on her back so you cannot see her legs, only her feet sticking up above her buttocks would be a cool angle also. This is nice... great study on the human form and lighting. Great job. |

A good study. Great clarity. I love the pose of the subject, very intrigueing and interesting. To me, for this image the lighting seems just a touch harsh. Right edge of subject, especially on the feet look to be on the verge of blowing out. Perhaps just a little more 'subdued' lighting? A nice, thought provoking image though, nice work. |
