 I wanted to shoot someone all by himself in a crowd, or maybe a couple hugging or kissing while the crowd swirled around them. Ideally, they'd be still while the crowd blurred out. That would've been "alone in a crowd."

But this title stuck with me, too, so I took my camera along on my commute this morning. I didn't think I'd get anything, but then this scene landed right in front of me. Then the challenge was getting a sharp shot while standing on the subway!

I set the camera on manual and found some test settings that seemed okay, and then waited for the next station. Luckily, it worked!

Editing was just a little curves adjustment to make it colder-feeling and to correct a pretty strong cast, resizing, sharpening a bit and then doing another sharpening pass with 17/50/0 to enhance the contrast. No cropping. I wonder whether someone will suggest cropping on the left, but I didn't want the lower-left corner woman's head to be hanging by itself.

I thought this was an excellent take on the challenge and a very interesting photograph - I gave this a 7. Nice work!

Just wanted to say I gave you a 10 for this shot. I really felt this one should have done better. My eyes are drawn to the guy in the middle but then they roam and you see how everyone is alone in the crowd. I like how you had most everyone in focus. The lighting was pretty good also. I can't think of anything I would change. You seized the moment and that is what it is all about. I would love to get a shot like this someday. Great job.

Great concept for a title. I do not like how there isn't a focus on the people who are alone together, not many will assume that the title has to do with the whole section of the subway full of people.
The photo is way to busy, the focus is all over the place, but my eye is mostly drawn to the man with the hat, which makes for the interesting concept of him being in his own place all by himself. The photo is a bit boring and looks like a point and shoot situation. It's a bit pasty, and if you don't already, I would suggest editing your pic BEFORE resizing it. Overall not a very good shot though.

The color balance seems to be off. Maybe a bit too much green or cyan?

i have to come back and see whos this thats always doing photos in the montreal metro.
other than that this is a 10 in my books. youve captured a feel that is perfect for your title, with everyone in their own little world while be all together in the metro. im giving this a 10.

fair oxymoron. The picture is a slice of life type of shot and isn't bad. I tend to like these shots better in B&W. 5

The only successful "alone together" shot in the challenge, and there are many attempts. The composition is a bit messy, though. 8

I love the interpretation of this phrase - this is more the image i would assign to this phrase than a lone person. It's a great photojournalistic shot! 10 from me

great image. In every metro in every city this is the scene that we see every day. often in the same train there are the same persons every day and every they read the newspapers.....

while I'm not crazy about the lighting and contrast I think you captured this oxymoron better than the others I've seen. Everyone doing their own thing, wrapped up in their own business all packed into a train. High points for demonstating a very popular oxymoron. 8

A good choice for this challenge. Fits quite well. Love the way the guy standing up in the background is checking you out ~ crazy photographer anyway. :D The guy with the hat and glasses is the focal point for me and you've placed him strategically within the composition. Nice job overall. Good luck in the challenge. Giving you an extra point just for having the gonads to take this shot in the first place. :)
