This is my daughter Morgan, who is 2 1/2 months old. This is also my drum which has sat in the basement in a case for a long time. Loud drums and young kids don't go together.

Shot in RAW, crop, resize, neat image, a little dodge and burn.

Post Challenge:
My goal was to have her asleep but just trying to get her in there woke her up, so that's part of the confused expression. Many thanks to my wife for understanding my crazy idea. I agree with the comments on the tight crop. The whole thing was shot in a small space, so that was somewhat limiting.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First Impression - the most important one:
Aww! How cute!

Composition: This photo follows the rule of thirds nicely. The viewer is immediatley drawn to the baby, then the round frame of the drum leads the viewer's eye nicely around the perimiter of the photo, and right back into the main subject.

Subject: Aww, cute and cuddly. The expression is great! This photo really speaks from the heart. The viewer can easily tell that the photograph was taken with love. The message is obvious in this one. Unfortunatly for your score, the photo lacks the "wow appeal" that makes winners here. Notice my first impression was "aww," not "wow."

Technical (Colour and light): Quite well done. I imagine this was a bit of a complex setup, but you got the lighting just right. Not too much, though there could be a little less. Don't get me wrong, I like it just the way it is... but I think it also could have been nice with some more shadow and mood.

Relation to the Challenge: Yep, two, unrelated objects. Check.

To grow its vote?: Meh. I don't know that this subject is one that can score really highly here, at least if it's not the most incredible, moody, wonderfuly lit baby portrait possible. But I don't think you should care... this is a photo you can cherish, even if the rest of us don't think that its the best thing since Ansel Adams.

Summary: I think this is a photo you can be proud of, and something I would frame and put on my desk. It is quite nice, and you got a nice score. Keep shooting!

Critique the Critique: A lot of effort goes into writing these critiques and I would appreciate feedback on how I'm doing. Do my comments make sense? Am I on track or way off base? Do my comments make you want to pick up a meat cleaver? Please let me know via a PM if you found these comments helpful, or not so much so.

9 for that great expression on the baby's face. Apparently someone's been playing that drum...

This comes with a potential hazard - what if the kid learns to bang the drum to get attention? :-) Interesting idea - the curve of the drum makes a nice frame.

By the expression on her face, it looks like this was during a rehearsal? ;-P

I'm not sure the baby is relating to this. :P

Is this a drum? Very cute photo, but wish it wasn't cropped as tightly as it is.

Her look of bewilderment is hilarious. Something about the composition seems a tad off. Probably putting a baby in a drum did it. LOL Great clarity on her.

The look on her face is so perfect - "what the heck am I doing in here?"

This is too funny... Lord even the child has a look of apprehension, almost as if fearing the din that will occur. A six for now, but I will be back to re-visit this one. Good luck in the challenge.

boom, boom...cute baby, hope you find another place for the baby as it is not recommended that kids be exposed to loud music ;-)
