I don't really care for the flatness of this composition. 4 sjgleah |

the angle on this photo is great, but you need a few things. first, try focusing on the bridge, and using a greater depth of field. second, get rid of that glare by lighting it from teh side instead of overhead. third, the shot would probably work better in black and white. |

If the bridge had been in focus, I would have rated this much higher. You may have had something different in mind however. The depth of field is very nice. |

a bit dark and out of focus |

Interesting angle! Unfortunately the white spot distracts too much. Use indirect light to avoid this. The DOF is too small for my taste. The strings behind this "thing" in the middle are in focus. But what is there? Nothing interesting. If you subject of interest was the instrument then you should have brought more if not all into focus. - stephan |

Dark image, very steep angle of attack, sharp light reflection (very distracting), disappearing strings (not good) and something unidentifiable in the right lower corner. 6 Swash |

Wow, I feel like i'm being carried infinitely far away. Good use of lines. I alos like the narrow depth of field. karmat |

great idea. the limited depth of field in the foreground was disconcerting and the lighting could better bring out the color and texture of the violin. keep trying! |

I like this photo, but I don't really feel like it truly fits the topic... |

This is way too dark to make out much of anything. Unfortunately the most prominent feature in the image is the bit of glare below the fret...

Good exercise in DOF, but subject is too vague to convey the age portion of the requirement. |

nice angle, but to be honest, this photo doesn't specifically speak 'old' to me. maybe if the woodgrain was more visible. technically, your focus (if you decide to use a shallow depth of field) should be further in the foreground, probably where the wood piece is that pushes the strings up (not sure what the real name for that is). you should also try and use different lighting so that you don't have that big white hotspot in the foreground. maybe indirect lighting? -- gr8photos (2) |

That big spot of light is a problem. You need to experiment more with the lighting. |

the composition here is excellent... I like the way the light plays on the strings of this instrument... my personal taste would like to see a little more focus in the foreground and then fading to soft focus in the background... good work :) - jmsetzler |

The composition in this photo is simply excellent and is the foundation supporting everything else. The only issues that I can see are the DOF and the distracting glare. For this shot I don't mind the out of focus foreground, in fact, this is one of the few where I think it actually supports the shot, good job. However, I would like a bit more DOF for the strings as we look down them so as to keep the form of the parallel lines farther down the neck. Good job on this one, I really enjoy the creative vision that has gone into it. |

i'd use a larger depth of field.. hard to focus. |

Much too out of focus for my taste. "Something Old" is not the first thing that I think about when I see this shot - perhaps a different angle would show more of the age/patina of the instrument. lhall |

nice depth and dramatic light...the focus should be sharper |

Very very very shallow DOF shot. Not sure it works out too well here since the focus point seems to be just beyond the bridge. Would have been nice to see the bridge in focus too. Interesting lighting and angle. Bit of a glare in the middle foreground. |

The focus area is too far out of the picture. It almost seems like an accident. Why did you choose that spot. Whatever you want your viewer to look at is the area that should be in focus, and your area appears to be right behind the bridge. |

I like what you attempted here, tho I think this image needs more light, or more accents of light to really be effective, maybe some incandescent lights to add some warmth? |

musical instruments are so hard to do. this one looks quite old and i'm sure its really quite interesting...however, this doesn't come through well in the photo. in fact, i'm not at all sure what it is? a sitar? in any case, the lighting is quite harsh, and it would have been nice to see more of the subject matter. ~mcmurma Aesthetics...4 Meets Challenge...4 Overall...4 |

Very unique perspective. I would have liked greater focus in the foreground and blurring in the distance. This tells me I wouldn't like to be farsighted. Good idea. Lisa |

I think there should be more than just two inches of string in focus.Almost no depth of field here. |

Very artistic and fits the challenge well - but I would have liked a much shaper focus - I'm being picky there. I love the lighting... (6) |

Nice photo but I wish that the bridge were in focus. I think one or two steps down in aperture would have given just a bit more DOF but would have kept the same mood. |
