One of my passions is making music. It constantly amazes me how such a beautiful instrument was created; how someone came up with the idea for the instrument and figured out just what size the keys needed to be, and at what angles they keys should be to make it easiest to play. It is truly a miraculous invention, no matter how you look at it.

For this to be more effective, I would have liked the whole set of keys in focus and clear. Personally, I like keyboard shots that are pulled back just a bit more than this one. I love the simplicity of a black and white keyboard, though. I agree that it's a very photogenic instrument and one I've always wanted to play. I play the guitar, which does have the benefit of being much more portable! :)

Simple and effective.
I love this shot.
A pity you don't have the use of an external flash. it'll work wonders.
I noticed that you're shooting:
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/54 sec

Try to do an aperture-priority and close the aperture to around 9... and see what you'll get. Remember to use a tripod.

Critique Club Review:

Either focus or depth of field is a little off. A smaller f-stop would have helped a lot here.

Lighting is dramatic. But the first black key doesn't show enough detail for me. I noticed one person was troubled by the reflection in the second key. To me it gices some reference for the shape of the key face.

Overall I like the picture. The composition is good, the whites are nice and white. It's the focus issue I notice the most.

the harsh shadows detract from this otherwise strong graphic image

A play on words more than visuals, me thinks.

Nice work, but I think the idea doesn't totally mesh with the theme. I still think the photo is very nice though! One of the best piano pieces I've seen in a while!

Lighting might be a bit harsh, the shadows are not appealing. I'd also like to see a deeper DOF so that both keys are in focus.

What's that blue reflection on the right black key?
