From the Critique Club
Hi Arnthor !
I'm far from being an expert , so don't expect precise technical comments , only my sincere opinion.
What I think is very good in your photo is the contrast between the subjects and the background , I mean this is not the place where a bonsai I expected to be found (lol). The desaturation works great , it accentuates even more those different "worlds" , as if in a greyish world the unique beauty was the tree.I really don't care if it's a real bonsai or not , it looks like a bonsai and that's enough for me !
The face is very funny but maybe too appealing , this has surely made some viewers to vote a bit lower because the challenge was Take a photo where a single tree is the main subject. .
The composition and execution are excellent , a very interesting photo that maybe didn't meet exactly the challenge.
Please feel free to email me about this critique , keep in mind that this is only my opinion.

the selective desaturation makes it seem gimmicky. I personally would have loved this shot if it were simply black and white or duotone. |

Would you happen to have the models phone number? I think he is really hot and I would really wanna meet him when I come and visit Iceland someday!
(kidding... know the guy in the picture...)
Great photo, nice post processing as well, two thumbs up |

can't agree more with jutilda.... this was an excellent shot.
same comment for the other man/woman-and-bonzai picture, from larus, ranked even lower...

Great picture and processing. At first I though since the tree was not a Bonsai tree it took away from the picture. But as I have had a second and third look at the picture the tree type does not matter. Maybe he wants a Bonsai so bad he uses what plants he can find. So bump to 10 |

He has clippers to clip, but there's nothing that has been clipped. ;>þ
And then, some people may hold the theory that it isn't really a bonsi at all, but a branch held in a tray with sand in it... ;>þ
Is that someone's brother? ;>þ |

If Joey ever took a photo of a tree, it would look like this - but I wonder if trees are just too happy for him in any form. :-) |

Very nice light and color. The tree really pops out of the muted background. Very well mastered and composed. Clearly one of the best shots in the challenge IMHO. |

it's an awesome photo, but i feel like the subject is very much the dude and the foliage is secondary |

I love the look of this one, the lighting and processing are very good. It seems as if the figure and the tree are hungering for a single ray of sunshine. What takes away from the image for me is the fact that the tree looks like a ficus and not a true bonsai tree (maybe it is some rare type of bonsai, but it sure looks like a ficus). Also the border on the right is a tad too cluttered. The more I look at it the more it seems like it is more about the guy than the tree. 6. |

Strange composition but I totally love it! It's like the guy is a total freak about Bonsai trees! LOL
Nicely done. I give you a 10. |

Your title implies the person is the main subject in this, and as a viewer I'm drawn to his unique expression as well. Think you're going to get hit with DNMC on this one. :( Best of luck to you. |

I was thinking of bonsai as a way out of my tree-less NYC situation. You make bonsai look sinsister. After all, it's only the gentle torture over many, many years of a living organism, the gentle amputation of its feeling tendrils, the imprisoning in accomodation far too small for it..... ;-) 8. |

I really don't think the tree is the subject here... It's well lit though and so it gets points for being a good photo, but not as many as if the tree had really been the subject. |
