 I have no idea how that tree is growing there. It's a concrete dock. Anyways, we sailed past the Black Pearl in Long Beach, CA and I had to take a few. I was left with a problem as a sailboat does not offer a flexible angle of perspectives. I wanted to do something a little bit more with this picture, so I'm taking a risk. I know there are dozens, maybe hundreds of people that will not like the choice I made going sepia/film grain, but to befit the mix of trailers, concrete, a pirate tall-ship and a mis-placed palm I wanted to pronunciate the modern 'juxta' by aging the feel of the photo.

I actually used Picasa for some of the final effects (I just got Picasa Web Album) and it's decent for what they tried to make it. The rest of the editing I did in CS2. Very simple adj layers, USM, then sepia. I intentially over-darkened with contrast/brightness so the sepia's lightening effect would balance out. I'll be sailing for a bit, so I can't get back to the internet reliably and I know this photo wont go over well with some of the voters, but it's worth a shot.

This photo like too many of my own has some good elements but is too busy. There is too much going on on the right side. The tree seems incidental instead of being the main subject.

i get what you were trying here but the tree plays such a secondary role in the picture that it doesn't quite do it for me. Cool pic of the ship though.

As with many people, I guess, I don't find that the tree is the main subject of this photo. It's too bad about all the vehicles on the wharf...

It seems as though the ship is the main object and the tree just happens to be in the bacgground. I like the photo of the ship but, doesn't seem to meet challenge.

This really isn't a bad photo, but I'm afraid that it doesn't meet the requirements of the challenge. Yes, there's a single tree, but I think you'd be hard pressed to show this picture to random strangers on the street and get a response that the tree is the main subject of the image. As far as the image itself is concerned, the composition is very nice, and the image is sharp, so good points for that. I'm not crazy about the sepia tone, but that could just be personal preference. Maybe try starting out with the original colors and then lower the saturation for the channels you don't want to emphasize as much. That way we don't lose the rich colors of the ocean or the sky, but you still have control over the feel of the image. All in all, I think this photo is fine - but I think you will lose points for the ship taking center stage.

When I look at this my mind says, that's an image of an interesting old boat. The tree is a very unimportant part of this image to me. On a technical note, you've lost your range of contrast....no true blacks in this image and nothing really white....detail like this wants to stand out (yes, even in a sepia-toned image).
