You mentioned that you were planning to reshoot. My suggestion would be to turn the padding on the goalpost so you can still read it, but you can take the shot looking down field. This would make it easier to keep things out of the background. Most of those pads just velcro around the post and can easily be turned around the pole. |

A longer lenses (70-200) with a f2.8(ould stop it down a bit ) would help narrow the DOF and fix that back ground, lighting is hard, Pose is good but might bring the crop in a bit |

Nice shot. I wish there wasn't a train behind him, but what can ya do? Good colors and focus on him. |

Pose and lighting are good - casual is always nice. Background is a bit busy, you could either reshoot at another angle or use more DOF... if unable to reshoot... try blurring the background. |
