I think the background is the problem with this photo. It's too distracting. A closer view of the batter, with a simpler background, would have made a better photo. |

I didn't vote in this challenge - but here are some observations...
First - your subject doesn't really stand out from the rest of the photo - value wise he is the same value as every player behind him. The human eye tends to gravitate to the part of the photo that has the most contrast. My eye picked up the ball first, then went right to the dugout to read the ad.
The focus isn't helping me out here because you are so far out the whole thing is pretty close to in focus, even at f/4! - so again there is nothing about the subject in the focus sense that say's "look over here at me". Granted the batter is sharp, but the colors still make it hard to find him right off.
As for the bat shattering - I bet you were thrilled that you caught it, but the voters spending a whopping 4 seconds per shot (made up stat) would have to be hard pressed to really see it. The bat looks like it's black against a background of black and navy blue - again not really jumping out at me.
So you captured a great moment, but the lighting and physics of the lens end up giving me a photo that makes me work to see the story. In general, photos that tell the story quickly score better.
Hope that helps - remember, I'm just a schmoe trying to figure all this out too!

Faster shutter and higher ISO. I feel the 1/500 wasn't fast enough or that F/4, which couldn't be helped, wasn't a shallow enough depth of field. The broken bat in the shot would have made for an interesting photo as I found myself searching for it. This photo feels like it was a split second too late. |

This is a nice, clean action shot. Color is good and picture is sharp as tack. There's no clear object on a third, with the exception of the ball. It's hard to see the bat, and the batter isn't on a third. The dugout with advertising pulls me away from the action. You may be able to improve it a bit by blurring the background and perhaps cropping different from your original. I would have given this a 5 or 6 in voting. |

I'll take a shot at this. First thing that I notice is that the shot is very busy. My eye wants to continuously jump around and find things to look at. The background really takes away from it. ALthough it cant be helped in this situation. I think that was truly your downfall on this shot. Its not very DPC voter wow factored. ALthough its good timing. |

You've done well to have the batter and the ball within the frame. It provides context and makes the image feel complete. However, if the shattered bat were more visible I think this would be an incredible shot. |

Very nice capture, this is so good because you used the surrounding elements to help you fit the ROT. The thick green fence pole is a bit of a distraction yet it seems ok in the context of the challenge. 9 |
