Challenge: Stopped Motion III (Advanced Editing IV)

Location: Juniper Park - Fontana, CA
Date: Aug 6, 2006
Aperture: f/5

Date Uploaded: Aug 6, 2006

This was taken at Juniper Park in Fontana, CA. I actually went there looking for a "From the Ground Up" or "Transportation" shot, but had to submit this shot to "Stopped Motion" after I saw it. :) I was taking random photos at the skateboard park when a mother noticed my gear and asked if I was shooting for a skate magazine. I told her that I was just shooting these for personal use because I wanted some great action shots. She then proceeds to tell me that her daughter pulls some great rollerblade tricks and is trying to get sponsored, but hasn't been able to get any photos that weren't blurry with her camera. So OF COURSE I volunteered to take some for her and burn a CD she can use. What can I say, I'm a giver. :)

So anyways, I ask the mom where I should set up to capture the best trick. She directs me to the edge of the bowl and I frame the shot (not knowing what "little" trick her daughter is going to attempt). And then it happens... This girl starts at the other end of the damn skate park, shoots over a spine, picking up more speed the entire way, then hits the edge of the bowl going like a bat out of hell! This photo was taken half-way through her full front flip, which she landed! :D I ended up shooting 3 more attempts at this trick (all in burst mode, of course), but this was still my favorite. So I exchanged contact info with the mom and daughter, ran home, threw a couple quick adjustment layers on it, and got the damn thing submitted with less than 5 minutes to spare. :) Whew!

Killer shot man. Watch out for that Chromatic Aberration at the edges, particularly on the face of the spectator.

How 'bout sleeping on a "bed of nails"? Cool shot, I actually like the spectator element also.

I hope this didn't hurt as much as it looks like it's going to! Amazing capture - stopped motion for sure!

ok, it looks like you guys were out having a good time. this looks like a great place to shoot, and i hope ya'll will keep going back and shoot some more.

this meets the challenge from a stop motion standpoint, but, as you've shot it, it's hard to tell what's going on. your subject is just too far away. try finding a place to shoot where you can get in tight, and focus in on your subject so that there's not a lot of clutter in the image that doesn't add to the image.

Yikes! Took me a sec to see the skates! This is clean, interesting, well lit and focused. Should do ok with this entry. Almost looks like the person flipping is on the spiked wall. Best of luck in the challenge.

this would be more striking if i hadn't come across the other one that looks like it was taken in the same place first (i'm surprised he isn't in the shot - must have been just in front of you!)... the same criticism i had of that one applies here; the background is too messy and cluttered and detracts from the overall shot. a liberally application of the burn and blur tools might have reduced the impact of the background a bit. i would certinaly have cropped of the left portion of the picture, say half to an inch away from the flying persons head. i like the lad watching on the bike, gives something extra to the overall composition and life of the picture... 5.

This really looks like a disaster in the making. I hope there were no injuries!

Kid on the bike pulls my eye away from the flip. Also at this angle it looks like the kid is roller bladling up the fence.
