 I played around with a few ideas around trying to put an egg back together again. I wasn't sure whether I'd go with showing being able to do it or not being able to.

First, I knocked a big hole in one side and drained the egg. Mmmmm ... scrambled eggs.

Then I "artfully" smashed it by dropping it repeatedly on the counter.

Since my original idea was to show Humpty Dumpty, I built a wall for it to sit on out of my daughters' blocks. Didn't have enough red ones, so had to mix long red and short green.

Next, I cut out a small strip of posterboard and taped it to the back of the egg to hold it vertical.

I had fun backlighting the egg with a white flashlight.

Then I wondered how it would look propped up against my daughter's brilliant blue fiber optic lamp. Turned out it looked pretty good, but the strands were too long; if I showed their tips, I'd lose all detail on the egg. The solution was to snip a few fibers to create a ring of lights around the egg.


Editing: noise reduction, cropping, sharpening, curves to enhance contrast, resizing, and another round of USM.

One fun note: I'm really enjoying my new Gorillapod, this flexible tabletop tripod thing. For this shot, I wrapped it around the back of a chair to shoot down at the lamp on the floor.

I can't help but think of the movie "Alien" when I look at this. I'm imagining the "Nostromo" exploding and throwing this egg through space where another unsuspecting ship will collect it. Whew...maybe I need a sci-fi fix. Great image! 9

Great imaging, but you can "see the wires" so to speak. In other words, I can see how you did it, which is half the fun for me.
