Driving home from work, I noticed a little circus less than a block from my house. Hoped they'd have an elephant so that I could retake a photo I shot a couple of years ago at the zoo. They did, so I did. Didn't like any of the shots that much from the first day, so I went back the next afternoon.

This is cropped from the center of one of those pics. After doing the standard editing fixes -- cropping, levels adjustment, etc. I was playing around with the unsharp mask filter -- setting some of the choices to absurd levels. When I hit this, I loved it. I think the levels are something like 100%, 100 pixels, and 4 levels.

ohhhh my! I still haven't seen this color in person but this is stunning! Strong textural details, rich coloring, well exposed, well focused. Just what appears to be a sun spot or sumtin' near the eye bothers me. Of course that can be fixed up easily enough outside of the challenge. Would like to see some catch-light in the big baby's eye. But all that said I end with "very nice."

What texture, what character, what is that bright spot on the right? you have done well at filling the frame with your subject. I like it. karmat

Elephants have a lot of texture, don't they. The hot spot slightly right and below the eye is a little distracting, otherwise a very good capture.

This is a wonderful feeling of texture. Wish I had thought of it. I love the way you have cropped tightly and the lighting is perfect to show off the skin.

07/22/2002 03:38:00 PM
Is this a rusted elephant? Not sure I like what you did to the saturation and that grey spot stands out so now.
07/22/2002 02:55:00 PM
nice crop. fits topic well
07/22/2002 01:37:00 PM
Looks like the levels have been jacked up way too much--the natural texture would have made this photograph more interesting to me. *5* -balynch

Excellent saturation I give you a 10 for this week and next week. Wall Street and the Republicans go hand and hand.
07/22/2002 08:26:00 AM
Excellent, much better than the more distant elaphant shot in this challenge.
07/22/2002 07:13:00 AM
This kinda looks like you just too a picture of a painting. If so, I really hate it. I can't stand it when people take pictures of a picture. I will give you credit that other than the flash its hard to tell if this was just a picture of a painting or not. Their appears to be a flash reflection on the right.
07/22/2002 12:19:00 AM
great shot, of a great animal
