I absolutely love this shot. I think it's one of my best. This came from about 120 shots and 2 hours of shooting.

It will probably be knocked down because of the all black background. But I really like the effect.

Nice shot, I feel you managed to make peaceful an implement usually used for battle.

This would work well if you fix the composition up a bit. The candle over the tsuba bothers me a bit. I would have put the katana on the top horizontal thirds line, and the candle on the bottom right thirds intersection point. The handle looks a bit strange to me, don't know if that is due to the lighting or if it's just the way the handle is.

Actually the technicals are pretty good, but I'm not sure I understand the photo at all... LOL.

Think composition though. The comp here. Move the candle to a more interesting point. Have the knife run one of the thirds lines of the photo. Centered rarely does well.

Also. having 2 subjects comes across as contirved in a person's mind. It is often more powerful to have three subjects.

Interesting contrasts in shapes and colors. I don't think I understand the significance or meaning behind the choices but it is different. I like the nice line the katana makes and the way the white candle really pops against the black background. Unfortuantely, all of the focus seems to be on the hilt circle thingie and since both the katana AND the candle are forefront, the focus should encompass both items better IMO. There is a bit of a flatness to the image as well, I'm not sure if alternate lighting would help by adding some sort of depth or not (with the black background adding shadows wouldn't really work) as it looks now it just looks like a sword and candle were put down and photographed, no real sense of as to why they were paired. But that could just be my weird way of looking at things. Regardless, I gave a 5.

I can't actually tell what this is. is that a sword? i know the thing on the bottom is a candle. It would also help the zen feel i think if the flame werent disturbed. if it were standing straight up then it would help the calm feel. Hope that helps.

5: the sword by itself would have said enough - the candle looks out of place
