From the Critique Club:
First off, welcome to DPC! I really like to do critiques for younger members. It's really cool to see what one can do before they become brainwashed by how things are 'supposed' to be done!
OK, This is probably gonna be the hardest critique I've ever done. You see I like to use this technique that I call "what I like/don't like" and I still haven't found anything that I truly like about this shot...
Why doesn't this shot work? The focus is a little off. You said youself that you didn't use a tripod. This and a slow shutter speed probably contributed to the focus problems. Whenever you do a setup shot there is really no reason not to use a tripod. My photography improved by leaps and bounds when I started to use a tripod religiously! The colors as well as overall contrast are quite flat. I can't tell in this shot if you used the flash or if this was taken outdoors in bright sunlight. On camera flash for a shot like this will basically wash out the tonality of the colors. It (or the bright sun for that matter) can also cause blown out areas like the white in the center of the spiral. It will also remove the depth of the shot. A little sidelighting would probably have improved this considerably!
The above are all technical reasons this shot didn't do to well. There are a bunch of compositional reasons also. To make it simple, there's just too damn much goin' on. Your eye has no where to rest. I mean ya got some pretty cool lines. The spiral is pretty cool. The carrots are pretty cool. The both lead toward the center of the shot but there's nothing really there to see... All the other stuff in the shot just seem like noise. I don't see why they're there...
Put all this together and you have a shot that doesn't score well. If you look at the top twenty shots of this challenge, you'll see nice simple sharp shots. That's what does well here...
Please don't take any of this as mean. I'm just tryin' to help out a new member. Please keep shootin' and postin'! I can't wait to see what else ya got in your camera...
Yours

interesting mix of food and condiments. The overall effect is too busy for my taste and the lighting is very flat. |

Now that is certainly a literal spin on the challenge.. food as art! The focus seems a little soft, but I like the colors and texture. |

Sleepy? Hallucinating perhaps? This is some wild composition! Bet that took a lot of time! |

Abstract? Good photo of food but doesn't meet the challenge in my opinion 2 |
