The feather has actually been turned into a pen by one of my sons - he cut the end off and shoved an old biro refill in to make himself a quill pen!

I thought it would be interesting to enhance the colour of the "old" and desaturate the "new", just for a change. Since the pen was predominantly blue and there was little or no blue on the feather, I was able to do this within the rules of basic editing (I hope!) by saturating and desaturating specific colours across the whole image.

The shot was taken outdoors under sunlight, against black card. The card came out fairly grey under the sunlight, so I adjusted the black-point of the image to compensate.

Greetings from the Critique Club

Welcome to DPC. I see this is your 3rd Challenge and soon you'll feel like an old pro.

We can't do anything about the voters who decided pens are not items of stationery, but maybe I can give you some ideas on how to make a more appealing image here.

Most people would make the leap to quill pen from the feather you have shown, but it might have been better to show the point of the quill to really get the message across. But, then, the quill has seen better days, and you couldn't use any of the PS tools to clean it up in Basic Editing. Maybe you could persuade your son to make a better-looking pen out of a prettier feather? Or use the quill in some context that would make an advantage out of its scruffiness.

The soft focus you chose was, perhaps, a bit difficult. If you don't yet have a tripod, try balancing your camera on books, or something else(er)stationary to give yourself more control over focus. Then I find it helpful, personally, to bracket my shots, to make sure the f-stop is right for the image.

You've got a good camera and one that will help you take great pictures. And I wish you the best of success in future challenges.

Nice shot. Wish pen were more in focus, dust speck in lower left gone and feather detail on quill more apparent

These are old and new writing implements, but where is the stationery?

Good subject matter, I'm not so sure of the composition though

The concept is good but the image is lacking sharp focus where the eye is directed to look (at the cross point). If you decide to reshoot this image, you may want to try showing the tip of the feather with ink stains to help drive your title home.

Love the black background and the simplicity of your subjects.

If the focus was sharper, this would be very good. 6.

I think a different, non-translucent pen would better serve your purposes.

I am sure you would disagree or you wouldn't have entered the photo in this challenge, but IMO DNMC.

Clever idea but some more contrast would help.

Nice juxtaposition (did I spell that right?) of old and new technologies...maybe could have added something newer like a stylus for a palm pilot...but still a real good image
