Nice composition, I think you did well with a difficult dynamic range.

Very cool lighting and composition. And extremely good story telling

I like what you were trying to do with this one.
I am a big fan of narrow dof, but in this case, having lost focus on the pieces in the foreground, you've over-exposed the piece in the background, and left the viewer with nothing much to focus on, if you'll pardon the pun.
The remaining highlights in this image (white squares and black piece light reflections) are too dark, and too close to the shadow levels to provide any real contrast or "pop", to the photo.
So, in all, it comes across as flat with no real attention grabber.
It was a well thought out idea lacking some technical finishing.
Better luck next time!

larger DOF would be nice

The out of focus King almost made me miss that it was in checkmate. The distance between the White Queen and the Black King, along with the emphasis created by the lighting doesn't sell the "No where to go" concept. Nice attempt but falling just a tad short. 5

Great idea but it would have come off better if the forground was not so blurred.

Good! Maybe some light on the king will give more confront.

Cute idea. The image seems a little soft (not sharply focused), and too dark.

Good lighting of the queen. Though I don't know who can be stupid enough to checkmate themselves! :p

Little low on detail, like the idea.

Cool idea, I like it except maybe the queen is too white
