Unfortunately, I'm going to have to agree with Artyste. Here are my thoughts in no particular order.

It's not that I don't like the background or location, I just don't think it's appropriate for this shoot. The bg is a bit 'grungy'. The family is dressed in khakis and denim and look very clean. One of my first thoughts was, "That ground looks awfully dirty. I hope they didn't ruin their pants."

I also noticed that they don't look comfortable. Especially the father. He's got this awkward 'half sit' thing going on. His leg is pulling my attention away from the others. The mom's legs are awkward too.

The wall is going uphill towards the right. A straight on shot so the wall was perpendicular with the ground would have worked better for me.

I am going to respectfully disagree with Artyste on this one :)

I personally like the color on this one. I kinda like the street with the red background.

I am not sure, however, I like the angle. I think shooting from straight on could have improved this so that the lines of the building were straight across your frame.

I would have also pulled your subjects away from the background.

The mom and son look akward....like they are uncomfortable.

I agree with what Artyste said about warning people beforehand that you are just starting out. I still do that with people as I have only been doing portrait photography for 2yrs. Even a few weeks ago when I was called to do a family shoot, I told the lady that I am very comfortable with individual portraits but I don't have a ton of experience with families and waived my sitting fee.

Keep trying and keep an open mind and the only place to go is up :)

Unflattering background and surface area. The blues are too bright, and your colors washed out. A common theme here.

You've got a good touch with people. I sense a lot of fun with the shoot, and the family looked like they were having a good time. However, your technicals need a lot of work. Particularily in how you deal with lighting and post-processing, and some in how you frame your subjects and the backgrounds you choose to shoot them against.

I'd suggest taking a look at photographers on this site such as Jenesis, Parrothead, Patrinus, dartompkins, SnapperL, goodman, thommo, and many others. Study how they do their works, ask questions, and above all else, try and keep an *objective* view about your photography.

I hope some of these comments have helped a little bit.

Good luck with the future, and if the parents aren't happy, apologize, be sure to emphasize that you are just starting out, and if it was a paid session.. offer another session for free once you've figured some things out.
